PTA membership is encouraged but not required to participate.

2. Are there any fees to participate in the competition?
Event is completely free for all current TRES students.

3. Why should I participate?
National Reflections Arts competition presents a unique opportunity for our students to showcase their artistic skills. All participants will be recognized in the TRES community. Three winners from each category will move on the next level at Howard County. Winners at National Level receive cash prizes.

4. How can parents help?
We are looking for parent volunteers to help organize the event. We anticipate 2 hours or less work each week; more in the weeks around competition itself.

5. Where do students need to go to participate in the event?
Students will create their artwork at their home based on theme “Show Your Voice”. Students submit their entries electronically to the TRES PTA reflections committee at tres.reflections@gmail.com

6. How many categories can a student participate in?
We understand we have some great artist in our student community who can express themselves in different art forms. That’s why, there is no limit on how many categories each student can participate in. Please submit separate entry form for each category.

7. Who are the judges?
Judges will be parents, teachers and other community members with experience in the respective category. If you are a professional artist in any of the above categories and would like to serve as a judge, please reach out to the PTA reflections committee; we greatly appreciate your help.

8. How are winners selected?
We will recognize everyone who participates. National PTA provides guidance on evaluation criteria. Our judges will carefully evaluate the artwork and description provided based on that guidance. Top three entries in each category will be declared winners. Winners will move on to next level i.e. county level. Winners will be announced in the school.

9. What is the evaluation criteria?
TRES PTA will follow National PTA guideline for evaluating each submission.
  • Interpretation of Theme: How closely the piece relates to the theme, based on the artwork itself and the artist statement.
  • Creativity: How creative and original the piece is in its conception of the theme and its presentation.
  • Technical Skill: The level of skill demonstrated in the basic principles/techniques of the arts area.
Judges strongly consider the interpretation of the Reflections theme during the evaluation process. It is suggested that students give their submissions a title that stands out and describes how the piece relates to the student’s personal interpretation of the theme. The following guiding questions can be useful when developing a title and artist statement:
  • How does your work relate to the theme?
  • What is your personal connection to the theme?
  • What did you use to create your work (e.g., supplies, technology, instrumentation, props, etc.)?
  • What/who was your inspiration?
